Cultivation
Walnut cultivation requires fertile soil and a cool environment because it is sensitive to particularly low or high temperatures. The most suitable period for planting walnuts is from December to February. Walnut requires special care as it has high requirements in water as well as fertilization. It is a crop with a long-term yield horizon because it is estimated that it will take about ten years to reach its maximum efficiency.
“A dynamic crop with favorable growth prospects”
According to the latest data from ELSTAT, 130,000 acres of walnuts are cultivated in Greece, showing an annual increase of 9%. Our country ranks third in the European Union after Romania and France with a production of 35000 tons of walnuts in shell per year. Despite the large production size of our country, there are shortages that are often covered by imports from third countries such as India and China, but of dubious quality and taste.
