Our land
Our chestnut farm
Where Mount Olympus meets Pieria Mountains and a few kilometers outside the city of Katerini is our chestnut grove.
The variety we cultivate is called “Pelion” (Voliotika). They are easily recognized, they are large-fruited with intense brown color, glossy and are considered the tastiest on the market.
The chestnut harvest starts around mid-September and is completed before the end of October. When ripe, the fruit falls on its own to the ground and only then begins the daily process of collecting them by hand. Next is their sorting and storage in special refrigerators.
The consumption period is estimated at about three to four months, culminating in the Christmas holidays when chestnuts adorn every festive home.
Chestnuts are eaten boiled, baked or as flour in cooking – pastry and are one of the healthiest winter snacks.
“The acorn of Zeus”
Chestnuts spread in ancient Greece during the Hellenistic era.
Theophrastus called them “Zeus Valanoi” because chestnut was the sacred plant of Zeus.
Xenophon characterized it as a “bread tree” since it was a main source of food for poor populations. It replaced bread and meat as they made chestnut flour.
A symbol of purity and kindness for the early Christians, but also of victory over temptation. Yes, there is no doubt that chestnut is a virtuous fruit.
It belongs to the nut family but the edible part of the fruit is soft and characterized by a high content of complex carbohydrates while containing protein of high biological value.
Excellent quality chestnuts
